Investing in local sustainable assets - A lunchtime visit to Trowle Solar Farm

Solar power for 1,800 homes over 12 acres, >8% inflation-linked returns, 5 Megawatts of power generation, one of 17 sites within the Wessex Gardens Fund

Wiltshire Pension Fund has made a £100m commitment to the Wessex Gardens Fund managed by Schroders Greencoat, which is dedicated to accelerating the development of renewable assets, across the South West.

We recently visited the largest single site in the portfolio, and one of the largest in the UK, at Wroughton, in Wiltshire. However, this is not the most local site to the Wiltshire Pension Fund offices.

On a sunny lunchbreak, perfect weather for harvesting photons, we made the short drive across Trowbridge to the Trowle Solar Farm, sitting on elevated land on the outskirts of town.

The site covers 13 acers and generates 5MW of power, enough to power 1,800 homes.

It is one of the smaller sites in the portfolio, in contrast to the 60MW site we visited previously in Wroughton.

The total portfolio is made up of 17 sites, spread primarily across South West and into South Wales. The largest single site is at Wroughton with the smallest being Dunkeswell in Devon. Check out the following map for all of the locations and details:

Conclusion

Our visit was a perfect way to learn more about our investment, and see the local impact this investment portfolio is having. We were better able to understand the work Schroders Greencoat are doing to protect our investments. We look forward to seeing how the remaining £30m of our commitment to Wessex Gardens will be invested in renewable assets across the South West.
